Karuah Public School's vision for reconciliation is to acknowledge past injustices and the ongoing inequalities experienced by the First Peoples of this Land and their children as a result of colonisation, as we commit to working towards a more equal, equitable and respectful future.
Acknowledging Karuah Public School's painful past and using this learnt knowledge to heal community for our children's future, is our vision of reconciliation. With government policy actively removing local Aboriginal students from our school grounds in 1916 to a separate Karuah Aboriginal Mission school until 1954, our divided school community and the trauma associated with events of the past, give us a strong purpose for reconciliation.
Our vision is to redefine our bricks and mortar from a culturally exclusive institution, to a culturally safe, welcoming and inclusive learning place. Our vision sees our school as a crucial tool in educating towards historical acceptance of the wrongs done to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Our vision sees both Elders and children, whose ancestors were once removed from our grounds, engaged in our school; with culturally responsive opportunities to share knowledge, stories, and language, and having a voice in change. Our vision sees Aboriginal students thrive through high expectations relationships, with equal and equitable education opportunities and outcomes.
Our vision is more than a vision. We believe that we can make this vision a reality. We believe that we can work together as a whole school community to change the narrative of the school - and move forward into an inclusive, bright future.
