At Riverside Preschool we aim to continue to work collaboratively with local Wurundjeri Elders and community members to provide a warm and inviting space for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families and all children and families. We believe that the acknowledgement of Australia’s First Nations peoples should be embedded in all aspects of our kindergarten program and the First Nations perspectives be respectfully included in a meaningful way. We are continuing our journey of learning to further develop our knowledge, empathy, and respect for First Nations peoples. Our aim is that as we work toward this goal, children and families accessing this service will also develop a rich understanding of the culture, history, and perspectives of First Nations peoples. To us, reconciliation means both First Nations peoples and non-Indigenous Australians work together co-operatively, actively and with open two-way communication. Given that our suburb includes remnant areas of reserve/bush land, we acknowledge that part of our role is to work sustainably with local Wurundjeri community to maintain this land and further our work on sustainability issues with our children and families. We will also work towards including local Wurundjeri plant life into our environment. Staff at Riverside Preschool are committed to attending appropriate professional development in order to deepen our knowledge of First Nations peoples and their culture, histories and perspectives. We will endeavour to respectfully pass this knowledge, once gained, onto children and families accessing our service in an appropriate and culturally sensitive manner.
