The focus of this RAP Action is twofold. The first aspect is encouraging teachers and educators to engage with their own cultural competence training and, at the same time, consider how to respectfully integrate concepts and principles from that training into their everyday curriculum and programming. Teaching students and children about culturally aware attitudes and behaviours more generally is an important step towards developing rich and responsive programming focused on engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and contributions more specifically.
Secondly, there are other ways in which teachers, educators, parents and community members can support students and children to explore their own cultural competence. This may be done through reflective engagement with training courses, film, art, music or cultural experiences led by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. These cultural competence activities need to be supported by ongoing learning opportunities facilitated by teachers and educators.
