The Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (The Standards) comprise seven interconnected Standards. Administered by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL), these Standards outline what teachers should know and be able to do throughout their career progression, and are organised into three domains of teaching: Professional knowledge; Professional Practice; and Professional engagement. All Australian teachers should be familiar with these Standards and use them to inform their professional growth.
The Australian Professional Standards for Teachers includes a Focus Area directly relating to reconciliation:
• Standard 2: Know the content and how to teach it.
• Focus Area 2.4: Understand and respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to promote reconciliation between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians and non-Indigenous Australians.
While Focus Area 2.4 presents a great opportunity for Australian teachers to engage in this important part of our shared national identity, many teachers are unsure of how to meaningfully address it. Participation in the development and implementation of your school’s RAP, and engaging with Narragunnawali’s professional learning and curriculum resources, provides many opportunities for teachers to meaningfully address Focus Area 2.4.
