Celebrate Days of National Significance

794 schools and early learning services have added this Action to their RAP.

Organising and participating in events to celebrate or commemorate days/weeks of national significance for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the reconciliation movement demonstrates pride in, and respect for, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and contributions. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives should also be included in the celebration or commemoration of other national days, including the 26 January (Australia Day) and Anzac Day.

Throughout the year there are a number of days and weeks that are significant for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the reconciliation movement. Working with the community to celebrate these days is a great way to show pride in, and respect for, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures.

Providing background for students and children about the historical origins of these days and weeks, as well as the meaning attributed to them by Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous Australians is important. Teaching this content provides a direct opportunity to engage in the Early Years Learning Framework or the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures cross-curriculum priority.

Incorporating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives into the celebration of other national days (such as 26 January and Anzac Day) will provide a more nuanced understanding of the significance of these days.
