Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their rich and diverse cultures have continued to be connected to Lands across Australia for many thousands of years. Fostering unity in diversity is one of the five key dimensions of reconciliation in Australia. Nonetheless, the history of multiculturalism in Australia since colonisation has resulted in complex race relations that find their way into the media through significant people and events, and that are sometimes communicated through deficit, divisive and discriminatory dialogues. Differing perspectives on people and events covered in the media can be prolific and polarised, and the media discourse is often overtly and covertly mimicked by conversation among the general public, again reflecting Australia’s complex relationship with questions of 'race,' racism and race relations.
In this activity, staff critically explore media coverage of the final years of Adam Goodes' AFL career, and critically reflect on the race relations dimension of reconciliation in Australia.
Note: Discussing racism can be confronting or traumatic for some people. Care should be taken to create a culturally safe and respectful environment when using this resource, and when talking about racism and specific incidents involving racism in Australia more generally.
