Narragunnawali: Reconciliation in Education

Professional Learning in Action for Teachers

Delivered by Reconciliation Australia’s Narragunnawali team over two afternoons, this in person workshop provides facilitated engagement with a curated selection of Narragunnawali Professional Learning resources, as well as supporting the development of professional learning communities. Participants will gain an understanding of the context and concept of reconciliation in Australia and their place in the reconciliation movement, as well as learning about tools to support teaching and learning about the following themes: 

  • using respectful and inclusive terminology 

  • tackling tokenism 

  • curriculum planning and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures cross curriculum priority 

  • evaluating resources 

  • Reconciliation Action Plans as tools to support a whole-school approach to reconciliation.

These sessions contribute to 6 hours of ACT Teacher Quality Institute (TQI) Accredited PD for the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. 

  • Focus Area 1.4—Strategies for teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.  

  • Focus Area 2.4—Understand and respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to promote reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.  

  • Focus Area 3.4—Select and use resources.  

  • Focus Area 3.5—Use effective classroom communication.  

  • Focus Area 3.6—Evaluate and improve teaching programs.  

  • Focus Area 6.1—Identify and plan professional learning needs.  

  • Focus Area 6.2—Engage in professional learning and improve practice.  

  • Focus Area 6.3—Engage with colleagues and improve practice.  

  • Focus Area 6.4—Apply professional learning and improve student learning.

* Teachers attending these sessions must provide their TQI Teacher Accreditation number to Reconciliation Australia to have their hours logged with TQI. Teachers must attend for the duration of both sessions to receive the TQI accredited hours. Reconciliation Australia will record attendance and participation during the session.
