In June, the Narragunnawali team, accompanied by Dr. Justine Grogan from the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL), Max Lenoy from the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA), and Rhonda Livingstone from the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA), ran a four-part webinar series, focused on supporting education professionals to meet the growing expectations relating to reconciliation in education. These webinars are now available on-demand, and serve as an ongoing reference point for critical advice as you continue your personal and professional reconciliation journeys.

Reconciliation and National Teaching Standards and Curriculum Requirements

Facilitated through a panel discussion, the first webinar introduced the relationship between reconciliation and professional requirements for teachers. The webinar provided invaluable insights into how teachers and educators can incorporate reconciliation in their teaching/learning environments, with input from leading education sector stakeholders.
 

Reconciliation, Cultural Responsiveness and the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and School Leaders

In the second webinar, we learnt about the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and School Leaders and AITSL’s Intercultural Development Toolkit. The webinar provided support for teachers to understand how cultural perspectives influence teaching and learning, and how to develop a more culturally responsive approach to Reconciliation Action Planning and wider professional practice.
 

Reconciliation and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures Cross-curriculum Priority

This third webinar introduced Version 9 of ACARA’s National Curriculum, focusing on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures Cross-Curriculum Priority. It helped to equip teachers with the understanding and skills required to integrate a focus on First Nations content and perspectives in their curriculum planning and pedagogical practice, across all subject areas and year levels.

Reconciliation, the National Quality Standard and Approved Learning Frameworks

In the final webinar, insights into the updated My Time Our Place and Early Years Learning Frameworks were shared, explaining the new Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Perspectives and Cultural Responsiveness Principles in particular. This webinar aimed to enhance educators' understanding of how to respectfully incorporate a focus on reconciliation, and First Nations cultures and perspectives, within their pedagogical practice and wider service environments.

Together, these webinars represent a collaborative effort to communicate and support the critical place of reconciliation in education.
